Tips on Storage & Maintenance
Ski Tuning
While it is true that your skis were tuned when you bought them,
the friction on the show and ice, the occasional contact with
rocks and debris on the trail along with just general wear and
tear can make them perform poorly. They should be returned to
the ski shop periodically for a tune-up. About every 10
times they are used with ideal conditions, more often in less
than ideal snow conditions. High performance skiers usually tune
more often, and some after each day of skiing. Well-tuned skis
will help you enjoy your skiing more, will help you improve your
skiing .skills, and therefore, make your skiing a lot more fun.
Skis that are tuned will:
♦ Turn easier
♦ Glide or slide smoothly
♦ Have
better edge grip on hard snow
♦ Be capable of skiing
faster
♦ Give you better control of your speed and direction
♦ Have
bases protected against the elements.
Boot Storage
Always keep your boot liners dry. For best drying,
remove the liners from the shell and let them air dry. This is
a must before storage and should be done during the skiing season
as well. It will help eliminate mildew and mold and the liners
will last you a lot longer and keep your feet warmer. Here are
a few other tips:
♦ Store boots at normal room temperature
and humidity (Under a bed or in a closet)
♦ Clean shells
with mild soap and water, and shine shells with Armor All.
♦ Always
store your boots buckled, when not in use during the season and
in the off season. It will help retain their shape and fit.
♦ Keep
shells free of mud, gravel and other contaminants. Such materials
imbedded in the boot soles may cause binding release failure.
Ski Storage
Proper storage will keep your skis in good condition
for a longer time. If you will keep in mind what a ski is made
of, wood, fiberglass, polyurethane and steel edges, a little
common sense will go a long way in storing your skis in the off
season. Here are some tips. ♦ Keep them in a place where
temperature and humidity are relatively normal, (steel edges
can rust)
♦ They
should be stored laying down or hanging up by the tips.
♦ Always
clean and dry skis before storing. Road salt, moisture, and other
elements can damage ski edges, bases and top skins. Mild household
cleaners can be used to clean ski surfaces for storage. But,
for best results, have your ski shop clean the ski bases, lubricate
the bindings, and apply a heavy coat of wax to protect the bases
and edges in the off season.
Here are just a few things to avoid
♦ Do not
store skis in a ski bag without first cleaning and waxing.
♦ Do
not store skis in a hot attic or in a damp basement, barn or
garage. Your ski equipment was expensive, if you take care of
it, it will last you a lot longer and provide you with a much
more enjoyable time on the snow. |
